This Vancouver-born indie-rock band is climbing its way to stardom. Said The Whale was created five years ago and stars frontmen Tyler Bancroft and Ben Worcester, drummer Spencer Schoening, keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown and bassist Nathan Shaw. While supporting their 2009 album “Islands Disappear,” the group has been awarded a Juno for “New Group of the Year” in 2011. They are currently on tour through Canada and the UK for their new album, Little Mountain.
I had the pleasure of seeing them play this past Wednesday (April 25th) at the Myer Horowitz Theater in Edmonton, and I was amused by their performance. Their show was energetic and dance-friendly, as well as mellow and sentimental. Their music features lyrics about beautiful Canada, and can create a rather soothing, personal experience if one has spent much time in Vancouver and Stanley Park. I enjoy listening to Said The Whale while skating around on my kitchen floor in fuzzy socks while drinking a tall and refreshing glass of orange juice. This music makes me feel nice!
