DIY Porn at Blue Review Film Festival

As a first time Blue Revue Film Festival attendee, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect from a D.I.Y. pornography festival at a movie theatre. I walked into the Metro in Edmonton, Canada and was greeting by a group of friends who looked equally excited as they were inquisitive. Continuing to walk down to the theatre entrance, I was thrilled to see that the festival had partnered with HIV Edmonton and their booth included raffle tickets for a “Quickie Kit,” as well as various forms of birth control and lubricant. Excellent.

Entering the theatre, I was handed a ballot form to vote for my favourite home porn video and overwhelmed by the explicit vintage pornography that filled the big screen as a “pre-show.” I felt a bit uncomfortable with the idea of watching porn with my friends, mostly because I hadn’t ever watched porn with anyone before. Don’t call me boring, I just hadn’t thought about it before. Much to my surprise, watching about an hour of vintage porn in a room full of friends and strangers turned out to be a lot of fun! We laughed, we shrieked and we even felt a little bit turned on despite the numerous sarcastic comments.

Although I was pretty bummed when the pre-show was over, I was incredibly impressed with Capital City Burlesque show that came afterwards. I couldn’t decide if I was more aroused by or jealous of the women dancing in glitter lingerie. Let’s just say I was biting my tongue.

Glancing at the list of D.I.Y. porn films, I still didn’t really know what to expect. Would it be authentic porn or funny porn? Would it be extremely heteronormative? Would I leave very unsatisfied due to gratuitous phallocentrism? I didn’t really know. Much to my surprise, all of my hypothetical fantasies of this evening had come true. There were lots of dicks. There weren’t any homoerotic porn videos. There was both authentic pornography and comedic pornography.

I enjoyed most of the films and was impressed to see a variety of pornography. Although I begin to tire of the multitude of funny porn, I appreciated the comedic porn a lot more after watching the real pornography. It was a much needed comedic relief. The only video that made me uncomfortable was unfortunately one of the winners of the festival. For confidentiality purposes regarding Blue Revue, I cannotname the title or videographers. That being said, I will note that I didn’t like the idea of pornography that contained exploitation without consent… particularly in a restroom stall. The video was short, yet very triggering for me and the echoes of laughter that filled the theatre just made the experience a little bit worse. My hope for the rest of the festival and next year as well is that the videos contain a variety of heterosexual and queer pornography. It would also be beneficial for the videos assessed for offensive content.

Blue Revue is a fantastic idea. In my opinion, D.I.Y. home porn videos are much more intimate and satisfying than mainstream pornography, and the comedic porn had a refreshing entertainment value. If you’re interested in making your own video, you should definitely submit something. Don’t be intimidated, the Blue Revue environment is very genial and open-minded. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I hope that the festival returns for a fourth year, I’ll be waiting with my  “I <3 D.I.Y. PORN” shirt.
