When Tori Kelly didn’t make the top 24 on Season 9 of American Idol, she didn’t pack her bags to quit music – instead she returned to her home in Canyon Lake, California and made an EP from scratch.
The EP, Handmade Songs, is exactly that homemade, as Tori transformed her bedroom into a studio and used YouTube as her audience to her creations. The combination of raw emotion, personal craft and a growing fan base has made her a popular face amongst the self-made musicians. Tori has toured internationally with her EP and is set to release an album in the next year or so, and is also currently supporting Jewel on her tour. Oh, and she’s only 20 years old.
Carrying the vocal power of Aretha Franklin crossed with the jazz and pop sounds of Michael Jackson, Tori’s sound is a unique twist of pop rock infused with straight soul. Tori has a clear understanding of how to craft a song. All In My Head off her EP has been appreciated by other artists on YouTube, as several have covered it and rests in the millions for views on her own account.
What makes Tori stand out is her ability to falsetto through several different octaves, which is included in most of her songs. But in the midst of touring, recording and writing new material, Tori also gives her fans covers from artists such as Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Frank Ocean.
