Designer_Collections_for_Plus_Sized_WomenEvery gurl in every size wants to look stylish in flattering clothes. Sadly, most stores stick to stocking clothes for regular sized gurls, forgetting about the plus sized gurl and her need for fabulous clothes. In fact, the average-sized woman wears a size 12-14 and weighs 163 lbs. That still leaves a solid number of women who are a size 16 or above and only 20-25 % of the fashion market caters to the plus sized woman. We look best in form-fitting clothing that emphasizes our waist and zeroes in on strong features like long legs. Tailoring clothing also makes a big difference for plus-sized women. We have the option to search online for clothes in bigger sizes, but unfortunately, that’s often our only option. The reality is that bigger sizes mean a change in clothing silhouette and more fabric needed, and many North American companies simply don’t want to spend money on the extra fabric.

Luckily, I have found some great places for plus-sized gurls to shop this year. Particularly with the re-emergence of the pin-up gurl styles that celebrate curves, many retro-style clothing pieces have emerged with the plus-sized gurl in mind.

  1. www.blamebetty.com carries a variety of pin-up-style clothing in sizes ranging all the way up to 4XL. Blame Betty carries dresses, lingerie, shoes, bags and accessories for both the average-sized gurl and plus sized gurl like this black and white retro Siren Dress for $79.00.
  2. www.modcloth.com is one of my favorite websites and they are well-known for carrying clothes in plus-sizes that are retro, fashionable and enviable to gurls of all sizes. Their selection depends on what they have in stock on any given day but many plus-sized items can be found like Karaoke Songstress jeans for $49.99 sized from 1X to 3X or the Every Dot of You Dress which goes up to size 3X as well for $169.99.
  3. www.gapcanada.com carries staple clothing for every gurl like t-shirts, jeans, and blouses. Some of The Gap’s jeans go up to size 20 like their 1969 ankle-zip legging skimmer jean for $79.95. Also, the printed boyfriend shirt for $59.95 also goes up to size XXL.
  4. www.rickis.com has a variety of office-friendly and casual clothing for woman up to size 18. They carry the latest trends, as well as some great jewelry and accessories at a great price like the asymmetrical ruffle-front blouse that goes up to size 18 for $39.50 or the chic pink blazer on sale for $39.99 from $79.50 available up to size XXL.
