Carrie Underwood rose to fame as the 4th season American Idol winner. The 30-year-old from Oklahoma has come a long way from the Pizzeria worker who gave up on her dream of singing after high school. “I had reached a point in my life where I had to be practical and prepare for my future in the real world,” she says. But when Carrie went out on a limb to audition for American Idol in her last year of university, Simon Cowell said she would be one of the favourites in the competition. Her winnings included a recording contract worth a million dollars, use of a private jet and a Ford Mustang Convertible. However, always practical Carrie turned down the jet because she didn’t have the money to pay taxes on it.
The country star is known for her strong performances, but may be more well known for her strong convictions. In May 2012, she announced that she would be donating $1 from every ticket sold to her Blown Away Tour towards the devastation in Oklahoma. Since she was born on a farm, it might come as a surprise to know Carrie is vegan. A practicing Christian, in July 2012 Carrie publicly endorsed gay marriage, saying she didn’t know what she would do if she couldn’t marry someone she loved. Married to hockey player Mike Fisher, the couple made a video for the Do it for Daron Campaign, urging young people to stop bullying. The singer has also starred in film, such as the inspirational movie, Soul Surfer. She loves animals and The Walking Dead, and wishes to play a zombie on the show one day.
