Beyonce recently released a self titled visual album without any warning. The album cover represents its simplicity: A black background with the title in baby pink letters. Without any prior advertising, Beyonce has already sold over 800,000 copies in 3 days! But is anyone really surprised? The 32 year old self described modern-day feminist is one of the most empowering career women in the world. She has performed for Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, was the first solo female artist to headline the main pyramid stage at the Glastonbury Festival in over 20 yearsand has been named the Highest Paid Performer Per Minute in the World. Oh, and she’s also friends with US President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama. No big deal.
Like many artists, Beyonce’s 5th studio album is a collection of stories that depicts her past experiences in life and love. While we can only speculate about what each song is about, there are obvious themes such as empowerment, love and motherhood. More obvious titles such as Blue talks about becoming a new mother to Blue Ivy, and Drunk in Love portrays her love for her husband Jay-Z, just like many songs on the album. Heaven is most likely about her quiet miscarriage and Pretty Hurts about the pressures of society. The self titled album contains 14 songs and 17 videos, with XO chosen as the lead single.
