You probably know that the over-the-top romance stuff you see advertised around Valentine’s Day is total bullshit. Even happy couples don’t act the way they do in Valentine’s Day commercials. But despite this, I still love the holiday. In fact, some of the best times I celebrated Valentine’s Day was when I was single. Growing up, my mom made sure my siblings and I never felt like we had to have a significant other to enjoy the holiday, and that’s always stuck with me. Take it from someone who’s spent most of her Valentine’s Days single – you really don’t need to be in a couple to enjoy it. Here are 5 ways to celebrate the holiday solo.
1. Dress Up in Your Best Clothes
I’ve always loved getting dressed up on Valentine’s Day because it’s the perfect excuse to look sexy as hell. I work in a hospital and I like sweatpants and Netflix more than I like people, so life doesn’t otherwise present me with the occasion to go out and wear stilettos and a low-back, body-con, red-lace dress.
2. Pamper Yourself All Day
My Valentine’s Day tradition is to treat myself the entire day. This holiday is more fun when you find little ways to pamper the one you love the most: Yourself. You can watch hot people do weird stuff to each other in 50 Shades of Grey, splurge on a new dress or drink a bottle of wine that costs more than a value meal for once – or you can do all three.
3. Brighten Up the Gloom of Winter
Winter sucks, so it makes sense to take advantage of any holiday that could potentially make it suck less. This Valentine’s Day try lighting candles all over your home, making chocolate-covered strawberries and binge-watching Netflix with good friends or comfortably solo. I guarantee it will make you forget all about how long winter is – at least for a day.
4. Indulge in Some Erotica
Personally, I don’t need an excuse to enjoy some erotica – but if I did need an excuse, Valentine’s Day would be the perfect one. Whether you like getting lost in steamy romance novels, you’re a hentai fan or you just really like to watch porn, take advantage of the fact that you’re an adult and this is a holiday dedicated to all things erotic. Bust out that vibrator and enjoy.
5. Re-ignite Your Passions
Valentine’s Day is about passion, so use this holiday to celebrate the love you have for life. Use this time for something that makes you feel alive and get to know yourself better in the process. This could be cooking a meal for yourself, re-learning how to paint or going out dancing with the rest of your single friends.
