A new year brings new fashion and beauty trends: Are you ready for them? Since not all of us want to parade around in the same attire as supermodels on the runway, I focused on the more wearable trends of 2016.
1. 70s Inspired Suede
Suede has been making quite the comeback this fall, and these staple pieces carry straight through into the approaching year. Luckily, you don’t have to wear head to toe suede in order to embody this fashion era. An easy way to style suede would be a skirt, camel-coloured jacket and fringe. Or if you’re feeling extra bold, you could even opt for a jumpsuit.
2. The White Button Down/Graphic Black & White
The classic white blouse isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. It’s a simple piece that can pull any outfit from sloppy to chic (unless, of course, you’re wearing stained sweatpants). Another trend that I figured paired well with the white shirt is graphic back and white. Think stripes and checkers. These are both sleek styles that go hand in hand. Upon creating this look, I coupled a colour-blocking white and black blouse with a leather skirt and patterned tights. The touch of the leather skirt added a little more edginess to the sweetness of the blouse and bun.
These slip-on shoes have been in the spotlight thanks to numerous fashion bloggers, however not a lot of people seem to know what exactly the mule is. Think sandal meets high heel, minus the wedge. It’s overall an extremely comfortable and wearable shoe. You can easily wear them with a pair of boyfriend jeans or a casual dress. Purchasing them in a black or other neutral colour will leave you with more style options to choose from and give you optimal wear.
4. Band Aid/Boho/Flowy Pants/70s
This trend has been given many names, but it almost always incorporates the same types of pieces. This being flowy pants, which are extremely under-appreciated. These pants meet style with extreme comfort. You can dress them up or down, whether it be out for dinner, a cocktail party or lounging around your house. Whatever you choose to do with them, as long as you have the right accessories, you can look stylish. For this look, I took some flowy pants, paired them with a black quarter length sleeved shirt and threw a denim vest over the outfit as well. Because, when can you go wrong with denim? However, a smart blazer or cropped sweater would probably be more well suited for the colder months.
5. Crème & Caramel
This is one of the most versatile trends to uphold. This style basically incorporates camel-coloured tones, caramels, crèmes and off whites. With just the right amount of difference between the colours, you can create your own spotless caramel look. Take a darker, almost mocha coloured jacket and pair it with some smart beige trousers: Your own crème and caramel trend done.
6. Feathery Eyebrows
The trend that seems to be competing for the top spot on Instagram this year is feathery eyebrows. The feathery brow trend focuses less on the preciseness of the brows and more about the wispiness of it, brushing your eyebrows in an upwards-backwards direction.
7. Red Lips
Once again, red lips are sticking around with their timeless, ageless look. However, the lighter side of the red spectrum seems to be what the trend has switched to now.
8. Blue Eye Shadow
Blue eye shadow and eyeliner have returned. Blue eye colours can be a little intimidating for some, therefore I tried to create a look that was a little less harsh. Instead of smacking some blue onto my eyelids, I placed a sparkly, pencil eyeliner in a bright blue in my bottom waterline and lower lash line. This adds pop of colour to my classic cat eye. Note: This lovely blue works with a bright red lip, which is extremely wearable for the daytime as opposed to a dark, vampy red that gets all over your coffee cup.
9. Glitter Beards
Men didn’t get pushed out of the beauty trends of 2016, as we have now been presented with glitter beards. If you thought this trend was a joke, well turns out that glitter beards are very real. My own word of advice: Maybe adding a couple of sparkles may be a little less intimidating than dumping glitter onto your cherished hair.
These 2016 trends are versatile and wearable, adding spice to an outfit that could have otherwise started as boring and typical. Take this new year to experiment with your wardrobe and makeup that you may not have explored back in 2015.
