In 2016, watching someone’s YouTube channel has become the new television series. But since we’re leaving TV behind, let’s also leave behind unhealthy forms of media and start following those who reflect our values. Here are 6 socially conscious YouTubers you should be watching:

  1. Franchesca Ramsey

You may know Franchesca Ramsey (@chescaleigh) from her brilliant viral video Shit White Girls Say…to Black Girls – but if you haven’t checked out the rest of her channel, you’re missing out. Franchesca’s hilarious and informative videos focus on being more aware of the social issues that surround you. But you don’t have to take my word for it – even MTV recognizes Franchesca’s talent. Their YouTube channel, MTV News, features videos by Franchesca breaking down current events, such as Why Are People Comparing Trump to Hitler?

Check out one of my personal favorites on Franchesca’s main channel, 5 Tips for Being An Ally, and you’ll see why Franchesca Ramsey is number one on this list of socially conscious YouTubers. In just three and a half minutes, Franchesca explains privilege, checks her own privilege as a straight, cis woman, tells viewers how to be an effective ally AND delivers a perfectly timed joke about Michelle from Destiny’s Child.  Scroll to the description box below and you’ll see that Franchesca provides abundant sources for her facts and articles for further reading.
