Over the past few years there has been a major rise in awareness of natural health products – especially essential oils. There have been hundreds of companies that have popped up offering their on-brand essential oils, such as Saje and doTERRA.
For those of you who don’t know what an essential oil is, it’s an aromatic compound and there are over 3,000 varieties of them. These compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots and flowers of plants. Essential oils have a long history of being used for food preparation, beauty treatment and health care practices – as their use dates back to 3500 BC. They work with the body to address issues and root causes on a cellular level, able to pass through the cell membrane.
Back to our modern day, essential oils have proven to be a beneficial alternative to Western medicine. Many of us aren’t aware of the side effects and consequences that come along with using prescription medicines for say, muscle and joint pains, cellular level functioning, mental illness—the list goes on. With mental illness being an issue that is commonly ignored by society, many are not aware of some of the severe side effects that some of these medications have. In my own personal journey with mental health, I decided to take a more natural route, using a combination of different supplements and essential oils. Through also being a psychology student, I have learned more and more about these mental illnesses and the medications used for them.
Essential oils can be an alternative when dealing with mental illness, such as helping muscle and joint pains, cellular level functioning, etc. For example, frankincense is referred to as the “king of oils.” It has many different properties and even passes through the blood-brain barrier when taken internally (in your mouth). It helps and supports memory loss, autoimmune disorders, immune system and cellular health, emotional balance and has even aided those battling cancer. There are multiple testimonies from those struggling with these illnesses who have managed to recover. Frankincense even helps with basic things, such as skincare. To prevent wrinkles and keep my skin healthy, I add a drop or two of frankincense to my face lotion.
One of doTERRA’s most popular essential oils is lemon. A lot of people add slices of lemon to their water for either the taste, a detox, etc. But over time, the acidity of those lemon slices begin to wear down the enamel on your teeth. By replacing a lemon with a few drops of the lemon essential oil, you don’t have to worry about that – you just get to focus on all the benefits you’re getting, such as: Balancing your pH levels, cleansing your system, giving you a natural energy boost, and helping out your body when you’re getting sick. After all, how many times have you been told to put some lemon in your tea when you’re sick? This is exactly why. Lemon has incredible benefits when it comes to cleansing your body and supporting your immune system.
Another essential oil blend that is exclusive to doTERRA is deep blue. Deep blue is the soothing blend, comprised of wintergreen, camphor, peppermint, blue tansy, blue chamomile, and helichrysum. Now from my personal experience and that of my friends and family, this is a miracle worker. As an athlete throughout high school, I suffered multiple injuries and I wish I had known about deep blue when I was still competing. This oil is perfect for muscle, back, and joint pain, aches and pains (especially in the hands), post and pre workout. Even people who suffer from severe migraines will use this oil blend on the back of their necks, temples, and eyebrow bone to relieve the pain.
These are just a few essential oils to name the hundreds that are out there. Focusing specifically on doTERRA, these are essential oils that are safe to be taken internally, as well as topically (on the skin) and inhaled/diffused. This is also a company very focused on giving back to the community and helping out those in need. All of the plants used for their oils are grown in the countries that they grow best; lavender is grown in France, vetiver is grown in Haiti, and so forth. They partner with the local farmers to grow their product and meet the standards the company has set as their certified grade, CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade). This ensures that as customers you are receiving the most potent, pure and consistent essential oil products.
