Laci Green has come a long way since stirring up controversy with her philosophical vlogs in 2008. Since then she’s become most popular for her YouTube channel, Sex+, which discusses sexuality in a frank, fun way – and in October we all cheered as her channel hit 1 million subscribers. Laci’s pursued other avenues in the online community such as working for Planned Parenthood and DNews – but most recently she’s been breaking into the mainstream with her new show, Braless, on MTV. Laci fills us in on why her show is groundbreaking and what we can expect from it – as well as some things you may or may not know about her.

1. Flurt: Watching you hit the 1 million mark was so emotional. What was that experience like for you?

It was amazing! I’m not typically one to put too much stake in numbers, but there’s something very symbolic about 1 million. My channel is a site of activism and a pet project that I’ve been working on for years. To feel some degree of public acknowledgement is a very powerful motivator to keep going.

2. Flurt: Your new show Braless will be airing on MTV for 12 weeks. Why is this groundbreaking for television?

Laci: Braless is a show about feminism. We’re not hiding it, we’re not shying away from it, we’re really letting loose (which is the philosophy that informed the name). For MTV to take up a project about gender equality and sexuality is a big deal – stuff like this just doesn’t have a lot of mainstream support. I am so excited to be working with them and to get some important conversations started!

3. Flurt: Can you tell us some things you’re excited for us to see on your new show?

Laci: I’m really excited to talk about pop culture because it’s the site of so many interesting gender/sexuality phenomena. I’m hoping that people who enjoy my personal channel will find something new and interesting to think about as we take many of those core concepts on Sex Plus and apply them to the entertainment industry.

4. Flurt: When you’re not working on Sex+ or DNews, what’s something you do that most people don’t know about?

Laci: I’m a nature junkie and a foodie. I love to strap on my hiking boots and head out for adventures on the weekends. I also cook all kinds of whacky (and delicious, if I do say so myself) plates at home all week. One of my weird hobbies is to take typically unhealthy foods and try to innovate healthy versions of them.

5. Flurt: What advice do you have for young women with big dreams like yourself?

Laci: Make time for things that make you happy. Don’t put it off. Feed your soul and don’t feel bad about it. I felt like a nerd in college giving up my Friday nights to make YouTube videos alone in my apartment, but I did it anyway because it energized me. There’s intrinsic value in pursuing your passions, even if it’s not a career. You never know what will become of it with enough time and effort.
